ISHPEMING -- Have you ever driven by a house where the yard is filled with trash or other items? Some people may think it's okay to let stuff pile up in their yard, but the city of Ishpeming says that's not the case.
Cathy Sanborn writes, "There are no excuses for a junked up nasty yard. Aren't there ordinances in this day and age?"
It's against Ishpeming City ordinance to let miscellaneous junk pile up in your yard. You're also violating this ordinance if your grass is growing out of control.
Ishpeming City Manager, Jered Ottenwess, says there is a code that they enforce.
"Ultimately they can face a misdemeanor charge and a fine. There's also authorization in our ordinance for the city to impose a lien on a property if the city does come in to clean up, cut the grass and clean up the weed violation," said Ottenwess.
That fine can cost you up to a $150.
Michael Vrooman writes, "One man's junk is another man's treasure."
To avoid any violations, officials suggest getting rid of the stuff you don't need.
Sandra Hebert says your house is a reflection of yourself, your life, and it can give a negative or positive image.
"When I drive around, see junk cars and just garbage laying all over, it just looks tacky. It kind of makes you think that people are just lazy," said Hebert.
If you receive a violation, you have ten days to clean your yard. Failing to comply will lead to more fines.
