ISHPEMING -- The Upper Peninsula Power Company is reminding residents about the dangers when digging near underground utilities.  UPPCO is part of a nationwide system to make it easy for those who need to do some digging.  It's called "Miss Dig."

Contractors or homeowners who wish to do some digging need to dial 811 before they start their project.

"We call them 'dig ins.' As unfortunate as they are, they do occur, and the biggest thing that we're concerned with is personal safety for those equipment operators, residents, homeowners, whoever it might be," said Scott Roehl of UPPCO.

UPPCO reminds residents that there is no charge for this service, and many times crews can come out and evaluate the site within three business days.
