MARQUETTE -- The first step to Bishop Baraga attaining sainthood has been completed.
In a release from the Diocese of Marquette, Bishop Frederic Baraga now bears the title of Venerable. This is the first of three steps in the sainthood process.
Now people may pray directly to the "snowshoe priest." In addition, church law states that Baraga's tomb be given public access.
While the crypt in the basement of Saint Peter Cathedral is open to the public, plans are being developed that will move his remains to a more accessible, prominent area.
