ESCANABA -- Students in the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District are doing what they can to raise awareness of the dangers of prescription drugs.  They took part in the award ceremony for the annual Delta-Schoolcraft Substance Abuse Awareness contest held at the Escanaba Middle School.

The substance abuse poster and video competition started five years ago.  Fourth through sixth graders made posters while middle and high schoolers made posters, essays, and videos.

"There were very serious problems with prescription drug abuse right in the schools, and I think that that's really been curtailed.  Now it's popping up in other areas and parts of our community, but in terms of the schools, things are much improved there," said Delta County Prosecutor, Steve Parks.

The students worked on the pieces at home and during school time.
