MARQUETTE -- Saturday's NMU graduates will take some words of wisdom from an honorary Native American.

Ada Deer is a former assistant secretary for Indian Affairs with the U.S. Department of Interior. She's NMU's commencement speaker. She will also receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the university.

Deer's message to graduates walking into Saturday's global economic struggles is simple.

"To make a difference in whatever way that they can, according to their interests, to their professions, to take part to accept responsibility and enjoy the challenges as well as the frustrations of citizenship," said Deer.

NMU's graduation ceremony began at 10 a.m. in the Superior Dome.
