MARQUETTE -- Students at Northern Michigan University can expect a $230 increase in their room and board rates for next school year.

The approval of the room and board rates was just one of the topics the board took up Friday morning.  The meeting began with statements from the head of various labor groups at NMU, including the UAW and the American Association of University Professors.

Throngs of labor supporters came out, packing the board room.  NMU President Les Wong says the university is sympathetic to their concerns.

"I think we're all sympathetic to the challenges and the problems, and that's why we're hoping that at the bargaining table, we can come to some respectful and well agreed upon conditions for the work we're doing at Northern," said President Wong.

The board also looked at the performance appropriation bills being considered in Lansing and how they may affect NMU in the future.  The next meeting of the board is scheduled in July where they are expected to discuss tuition rates.
