HOUGHTON -- Sixty-four high school students put on their lab coats and safety goggles to be a part of Michigan Tech University's 23rd annual Department of Biological Sciences Bioathlon.

Each team is made up of four students, and not only are they in the lab, learning about yeast fermentation, they're also getting the chance to put on rubber gloves and use a scalpel in order to dissect a mink.

"The State of Michigan is looking for workers that understand science and engineering, and our biological sciences has been a strong participant in trying to encourage young students to take biological sciences and other science as a field of interest," said Laboratory Supervisor Jeffery Lewin.

Each team is competing for the first place prize of a $200 US Savings Bond.  In order to win, Michigan Tech says students must demonstrate organizational skills, laboratory skills and creativity.
