Examination of the prosecutor's final witness

CRYSTAL FALLS -- An Iron County jury sat through a thorough examination Tuesday of Sergeant Wade Cross, the lead investigator of the case since day one. The prosecutor and defense attorney wasted no time getting thorough details of all he knew.

Sgt. Cross testified that he believed the point of entry for Johnson’s murder was her patio door. He says officers discovered the latch of the door forcibly removed and left on the table in the house.

“There was an indentation…a linear indentation of wood on that patio door that could be consistent with a screwdriver,” says Cross.

Defense attorney Dan Jaspen responded whoever removed the latch would have to be inside to do so. Therefore, it’s possible it was removed by someone Johnson was familiar with and allowed in her home.

The examination of Sgt. Cross took up most of the day in court, but after 48 witnesses, the prosecution finally came to a rest. It’s the defense's turn to present its side of the case.

It was already around 3 p.m. when the defense started and by the end of the day had gone through three witnesses for examinations. Laurie Juno, an acquaintance of Levack, had spoke with him the morning Johnson’s body was found--the same day of Levack’s stolen property trial.

“He was kind of laughing because he said they can’t find the lady to testify against him,” says Juno.

The trial is expected to finish up this week. If convicted, Levack could face life in prison.
