ISHPEMING -- The Ishpeming family fighting for their handicapped son's ability to play on his high school basketball team is set to testify before lawmakers in Lansing on Tuesday.

Dean, Jill, and Eric Dompierre left Tuesday afternoon on their way to the state's capitol.  Earlier this year 19-year-old Eric, who has Down Syndrome, was told by the Michigan High School Athletic Association he would not be allowed to play basketball next season because of age restrictions.

Eric, along with his father Dean, will urge lawmakers to approve Senator Tom Casperson's recent proposal, which would waive age eligibility in some cases.

"What we would like the education committee to do is to send Senator Casperson's proposal to the floor so that they can vote on it," said Dean Dompierre.

A vote on Casperson's proposal could come as soon as Wednesday.
