CALUMET -- With only 15 seconds to answer each question, the Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) challenged 47 high school students from Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon, and Keweenaw counties to find out how much they really know about the Copper Country’s rich mining history.
“The questions are tough, but it’s a great way for our young folks to learn the history and help grow the next generation of the keepers of the stories and stewards of our national parks,” said KNHP Superintendent Mike Pflaum.
Many of the students say they spent countless hours in their school libraries researching, understanding and memorizing historical facts.
After 11 rounds, only two teams were left on stage, and the Diamond Match Devils from Ontonagon High School won.
“I’m excited. We took third place last year, and we’re really proud of the fact that we’re taking it home again and with the same name that took it home last year,” said Logan Graff.
This is the sixth time in the past 10 years an Ontonagon team has taken home the trophy, and the students said they are looking forward to next year’s challenge.
