MARQUETTE -- Thursday, the National Weather Service held a storm spotter training seminar at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.  The seminar covered a range of topics, including thunderstorm ingredients, tornado safety, and severe weather criteria.  The National Weather Service uses a volunteer program called SKYWARN to help keep communities informed of the latest weather conditions.

"We have great technology, great tools at our disposal at the National Weather Service office, but we don't have eyes in every community or in everybody's backyard.  So by taking the information that we're getting from citizens in the community and putting it together with the technology we have, that leads to better warnings and forecasts for everybody here in Upper Michigan," said Matthew Zika, Meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service also says that with today's modern technology, people can be more quickly informed of severe weather in their area.
