MARQUETTE -- The American Legion boys and girls state is getting ready to send a handful of the areas best students down to Lansing. The boys and girls state is a summer leadership and citizenship program that gives high school juniors a chance to participate in the three branches of government. Thursday night at the American Legion Post, the past members shared their experiences to prepare the new group that will go down to Lansing.

"It definitely shaped my future goals. I had never considered going into law or politics before I went to girls state, but now I am exploring that option," said Paige Graham, a senior at Marquette Senior High School.

The American Legion is trying to raise money for the students' trip. A fundraiser is planned for May 9 at Buffalo Wild Wings. They'll donate 15 percent of food sales to those who present tickets that can be obtained at the American Legion Post in Marquette.
