ESCANABA -- A group of current and retired postal carriers in Escanaba are calling for public support of a six-day mail week.
The group staged a demonstration Thursday night outside of U.S. Senator Carl Levin's office. It's a part of the nationwide protest called "Save America's Postal Service" targeting all Senate offices.
They say proposed legislation in Congress would put an end to mail delivery six days a week in two years and phase out door-to-door mail delivery. It also could eliminate up to 80,000 jobs.
"We're a neighborhood watch. We aren't just postal carriers, but we are the heart of the U.S. Postal Office...out there delivering the mail," said protest leader, Sarah Paradise.
In a statement, Senator Levin said, "The savings from the proposed closings around the country are so small that they don't seem to outweigh the lost service to our public and the additional costs to our citizens."
The senator says he will introduce an amendment that will prevent the closing of any postal facility, unless there is an opportunity for the public to appeal the closing.
