ISHPEMING -- Project Food For A Neighbor is gearing up to help fill the food pantries at the St. Vincent De Paul and Salvation Army stores in Ishpeming and Negaunee.
Volunteers from the Wesley United Methodist Church worked to prepare grocery bags that were donated by Jim's Jubilee. The bags will be placed on door handles in both Ishpeming and Negaunee this Saturday. Organizers say this time of year food pantries in Marquette County are in dire need.
"We know throughout our community that after the winter season has gone by that when we come now to the April-May season, most of those food pantries are empty. So it's extremely important to replenish and restock while we wait for the fall can-a-thon efforts that will replenish again for the winter," said Richard Derby, Chairperson for Project Food For A Neighbor.
This is the first year that St. Paul's Catholic Church of Negaunee has partnered with the project. The bags will be picked up on April 21 between 10am and 12pm and will then be delivered to the food pantries.
