What you need to know before your flight
HANCOCK -- Last year the United States Department of Transportation found that 637 million passengers boarded a plane.
That averages out to around 1.75 million passengers a day and with summer travel fast approaching, there are many things you need to know to ensure the best possible flight experience.
“Your carry on bags or bags for United…there’s a 50 pound weight limit. If you go over that, that’s also a problem so you should make sure that you’re at 50 pounds before you get to the airport,” said Houghton County Airport Manager Dennis Hext.
Experts say it is important to remember the carry-on liquid rules. A container with 3.4 ounces or less filled with liquid or gel is permitted and those items should be kept in a clear plastic bag that is easily accessible.
“After a lot of frustration, I just opted to have a check-in bag. I think it’s worth the investment of just a few dollars so you don’t have to deal with things like this is too much liquid or this is how much you can actually take,” said passenger Susie Landers.
One issue that is specific to the Houghton County Airport and many others is passengers arriving late and not giving themselves enough time to make it through the checkpoints which could lead to a missed flight.
The Houghton County Airport says passengers must have their check-in completed at least 30 minutes before departure time. Passengers must also be through the security checkpoint at least 15 minutes before departure.
“Have your tickets ready and available, have your I.D. ready and available. If you have laptops make sure that you can take them out of your bag and put them on the belt so that they go through security,” said Hext.
If you are traveling internationally arrive at least 90 minutes before departure.
