ESCANABA -- The Upper Peninsula International Raceway will start its races on May 20.

All of this week, construction has been going on to expand it at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba.  It's going from 1/5 of a mile to a 1/4 mile.

The crew has hauled clay and leveled the ground to make it better for racing.  Race Director, Tom Dubord, says the corners were getting pretty tight for the drivers.

The $15,000 expansion project will benefit many in the community.

"Well, it gets a lot of the kids off the street, you know.  They're here racing, or they're busy working on their cars.  It helps community businesses, too, because they're selling a lot of stuff for these cars, you know," said Dubord.

The new track is expected to be completed Friday or Monday.
