LANSING (AP) -- A campaign seeking to allow the opening of eight new casinos in Michigan faces a key procedural step.

The Board of State Canvassers on Tuesday is expected to consider the size, lettering and other physical features of petition forms that could be circulated by a coalition supporting the casino expansion.

If the forms of the petitions are approved, supporters of the campaign would have to collect more than 300,000 voter signatures to make a statewide ballot.

Among the locations that would get new casinos through the proposal are Detroit, Pontiac, Grand Rapids and Romulus.

The proposal likely will draw opposition from some of the owners of Michigan's existing casinos. There are three casinos in Detroit and more than 20 others owned by Native American tribes.
