MARQUETTE -- The City of Marquette began work on the McClellan Avenue extension project after 40 years of planning.
The contractor, Oberstar, began by uprooting all the tree stumps on the perimeter.
The plan is to extend McClellan Avenue to Wright Street. They'll also build sidewalks, bike lanes, and realign Rainy Creek. The cost of the project is a little over 1.8 million dollars with grant money covering 1.1 million.
The city engineer says it will help improve traffic flow.
"The side streets around this area do get truck traffic. The only way now to get to McClellan and up to 41 - as far as a north to south route - is to use these side streets to get over to McClellan Ave. [and on] to U.S. 41. So that's going to be a big thing to have a straight shot from Wright Street all the way to U.S. 41," said City Engineer, Keith Whittington.
The project should be completed by the end of October. Until then, they ask the public to stay a safe distance away from the construction site.
