MARQUETTE -- A new exhibit at Northern Michigan University is featuring U.P. inspired artists.

The exhibit is called U.P. Focus and is an annual effort to allow local artists a space to display some of their work. The three artists featured are Susanne Kilpela, Carol Phillips and Russ Prather whose works include a mix of sculpture, paintings and three dimensional works.

"I think that artists from the U.P. can't help but be inspired by their environments," said Melissa Matschuk, director of DeVos Art Museum.

"The U.P., being sort of isolated geographically, we kind of do our own thing here, and I think that comes out in a lot of people's artwork."

The artists in this year's display split their time between teaching and working on their art. The exhibit will be at the DeVos Art Museum until April 6, when the artists themselves will be on hand to lead a tour through their work and talk about each piece.
