ESCANABA -- The City of Escanaba is a popular spot for migratory birds, and some experts say they work hard to keep it that way.
The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition held a series of presentations at the Landmark Inn in Marquette Saturday, one in particular about the importance of the Escanaba Migratory Initiative. Biologist Joe Kaplan explained why the city is a key spot.
"They migrate at night and then during the day they'll seek to get off the lakes and then they'll go to areas like islands and prominent peninsulas, and then they'll spend the day forging, so Escanaba is prominent on Little Bay de Noc, and we're just trying to make it more attractive for birds," Kaplan said.
The City of Escanaba recently partnered with the DNR to promote the initiative.
