An MMC representative visited Dickinson-Iron Technical students to talk to them about job opportunities

KINGSFORD -- Marinette Marine Corporation jobs may be in the future for some Dickinson-Iron Technical students. A representative from the company visited the school, talking to students about possible job opportunities with the corporation.

And one of the most available job openings is ship-welding.

"This is an employment opportunity to develop a skill trade. Shipyard welders have to weld all positions. Generally, once you've welded at a shipyard, you can go almost anywhere and employ as a welder and be a star performer," said Quality Manager at Marinette Marine Corporation, Bruce Halverson.

Marinette Marine Corporation is currently in the process of building two ships, and they have more shipbuilding contracts in the future.

"The economy is kind of low, and unemployment is kind of high, and being in a small town in the U.P., there's only so many employment opportunities. Even going somewhere like Marinette, sure students would have to relocate, but actually you're not very far from home, so it's a regional opportunity that I think is pretty important to some of our students," said Dickinson-Iron Technical Center Principal, Paul Bonsall.

The jobs available are long term, too. Each ship contract takes about six years to complete.

Most of the students at the presentation were interested in robotics, engineering, and welding. Those are all areas that match up with the jobs being offered at MMC.

"All those students work, they understand safety, they know how to use hand tools, power tools, etc. And those are the kinds of students that they're looking for at Marinette Marine," Bonsall added.

The MMC provided human resource information and encouraged students to apply.
