POWERS -- He's only in eighth grade, but Lee Finney of North Central High School will soon be representing the entire Upper Peninsula at the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Finney competed and emerged victorious during the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association Spelling Bee finals last week.  He said the event wasn't that tough for him.

So what was the winning word?  It was thwartwise.

"Well, my friends and my mom helped me study.  Like, my friends J.C. and Kyle Damon and my mom helped me study," said Finney.

Preliminaries, semi-finals, and the finals are May 30 and May 31.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee pays for Lee and one adult to attend the event.  The rest of Lee's family would like to go support him.  North Menominee County Community Schools in conjunction with North Central Area Schools and U.P. businesses are raising the additional funds needed to send the other four family members to Washington D.C.  They need to raise approximately $3,000 to send the family to the event.

If you would like to help Lee's additional four family members go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to support Lee, send donations to:
