MARQUETTE -- A sign of spring sailed into Marquette Sunday morning.

The Herbert C. Jackson ore boat made its way to the Presque Isle ore dock shortly after 11 a.m. Mayor John Kivela, City Manager Bill Vajda, and Mayor Pro Tem John DePetro came out to greet the vessel. This is the second year city officials have come out to present a key to the City of Marquette to the captain of the first ore dock of the season.

Sunday's event was a little more special as the ore dock celebrates its 100th birthday.

"CCI (Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company) and the mine is an immense part of the community, and this kicks off their shipping season. We're hoping it's earlier than ever and it goes long and we have a record-shipping year, so it means a great deal to the whole community and all the jobs," said Mayor Kivela.

The vessel picked up nearly 20,000 tons of iron ore pellets that are now headed to Dearborn.
