MARQUETTE -- Felting is the art of shrinking raw fiber or wool by mixing hot water with a binding agent, and on Tuesday, North Star Academy students got a hands-on lesson.
The seventh and eighth graders learned how to make felted spirit balls. It takes minutes to layer the fiber, add dish soap and hot water, and roll it into a small ball.
The project is a chance for students to learn a centuries old skill that is still used today.
"It allows them to be creative and use their imagination, and I think that is so important in education today, because it crosses over from the hard math and sciences into something that is more organic and allows the kids to experience something that is not necessarily paper-to-pencil or pencil-to-paper," said Arketype Inc. Founder, Paul Meinke.
Once dry, the spirit ball can be decorated with feathers and beads that hang from a lanyard.
