ALLOUEZ -- The Keweenaw Pines Apartments, along with Citizens Bank, held an identity theft seminar for residents.

Identity theft happens when the personal information of an individual is taken, like a Social Security number or online passwords.  The people who attended the event learned different ways to protect themselves from scam artist, and some examples of fake checks were passed around so the group could see what to watch out for.

"Do not click any links," said Citizens Bank Branch Manager Hal Franke.  "That will help them not fall prey because once you click on a link, if it is not a legitimate link, what will happen is they'll have bots in their computer, and every key stroke from then on, they're going to be able to track that."

Experts said a lot of times the fake checks that come in the mail have spelling errors on them, and they warned the crowd to never send money or give any information to people they don't know or trust.
