Colorectal cancer second most deadly cancer

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Monday night, Dr. Jim Surrell discussed prevention at a public forum at Marquette General Hospital.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer behind lung, prostate, and breast cancer, however, it is the second leading cause of cancer *death* in the United States. Dr. Surrell, the Director of Digestive Health at MGH, said, "The most common early symptom of colon and rectal cancer is, nothing at all. There are no early symptoms, so the time to get checked is to follow the guidelines."

Anyone over the age of 50 is advised to consult their physician and schedule a colonoscopy, however, if you have a family history of cancer, doctors advise getting checked out sooner.
