ESCANABA -- Saturday marked the eighth weekend of racing at the ice track in Escanaba Township. Depending on the weather, there could be one or two more races before the season wraps up.

Bikes, mini-quads, sprint cars, and four-wheelers raced on the track. The biggest bikes will hit 60 mph.

The track is just short of a quarter mile on the outside, and there are between 12 and 18 inches of ice to race on.

There are participants in their late sixties and others as young as four years old.

“It's great for the community,” said Pat Barron, ice race co-chair. “Our winters are long. We haven't had much snow. There’s been no snow-machining. This is something kids can work on all weekend with their dads, their moms, whoever in their family. And it gives them something to look forward to every Saturday.”

The community racing event is also a way to raise money for local charities.

Ice track officials say that despite the mild winter, it's been a successful season of ice racing.
