IRON MOUNTAIN -- On the ballot for Wednesday is a 0.5 mill increase over four years for the Dickinson County Road Commission.
Officials stressed the fact that the road commission isn't funded by property taxes, and instead, by gas taxes. However, with the increase in gas prices, there hasn't been an increase in the amount of money the road commission takes in. There's been a fixed rate of 19 cents per gallon received by the Dickinson County Road Commission since 1997.
“As I'm sure the people have noticed, we're financially struggling right now,” said Jim Harris, Superintendent of Operations at the Dickinson County Road Commission. “Us, as well as the cities, and it would really be a boost to try and help us have more money to keep our operations going.”
If the millage is approved, the road commission would receive close to $500,000 the first year.
