MARQUETTE -- The driver of the Jeep that rammed into a Lake Superior Village apartment in Marquette was in court Thursday afternoon.

Eighteen-year-old Christopher Maki reached a plea agreement that reduced his charges down to one count of driving while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Maki was driving a SUV on February 2 when he crashed into a residence in Lake Superior Village, causing extensive damage to the apartment.

"I'm not sure if it's poor driving experience or marijuana, and I suspect it was a combination of the two, but people deserve to be able to sit at peace in their own home without fear of damage, not only to their home, but to their person," said Marquette County District Court Judge Roger Kangas.

Maki was released on a personal recognizance bond under the condition that he not use controlled substances or alcohol. The terms of the plea agreement include reasonable restitution of the property damage caused in the crash and community service.

The sentencing date for Maki has not been set.
