AWOL soldiers face weapon charges in Munising

MUNISING -- Two men were arraigned in District Court in Munising on Tuesday after being arrested on February 18.

The men, 20-year-old Powers Ashley Goldwire and 21-year-old Matthew Shay Cox, were arrested in Munising after Michigan State Police received reports that they were in possession of handguns and a stolen rifle.  It was also reported that Goldwire and Cox were AWOL from the United States Army.

Goldwire is being charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm.  Cox is being charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.

Troopers with the Michigan State Police took the two men into custody without incident on Saturday and seized a 40 caliber handgun, two knives, and a 22 caliber rifle.

Goldwire and Cox are being held in the Alger County Jail on $30,000 bond.
