It is illegal to drive without a valid license or insurance in the State of Michigan
These days, some people may try to cut down their bills by not renewing their driver's license. However, officials would like to remind everyone that it is illegal to drive without a valid license or insurance in the State of Michigan.
Marquette City Police Officer Craig Marker says that it will cost you. "It could be more expensive to get arrested for not having insurance and a driver's license than it would be best to just go out and get it," said Officer Marker.
Driving without a license will cost you a fine of at least $1,000. It can also land you behind bars with a misdemeanor charge of at least one year. It all depends on your driving record and previous violations. Driving without a license or insurance can definitely cost you in the long run.
Not having insurance coverage will cost you more when you decide to get a new policy. It can easily increase from $500 for six months to $2,000.
Kelly Schultz with City Insurance says it can be a tough decision. "Sometimes it's a matter of do I pay my insurance premium or do I buy groceries. We have seen a lot of policies cancel for non-payment, and you know you always have that, but it does seem like it's getting worse," said Ms. Schultz.
Officials recommend you find another form of transportation like riding the bus, car pooling or even talking to an agent about cheaper policies.
