MARQUETTE -- First graders from Father Marquette Elementary School lent a hand to the elderly by giving them a tool that will help them become more aware of their health.

The students held a cookie jar fundraiser around the holidays. The money collected went toward purchasing scales for elderly citizens with health problems who could benefit from having a scale, but may not be able to afford one.

The first scale was presented Wednesday to Ms. Rose Thompson, a resident at Snowberry Heights in Marquette. She says by giving, the students receive a gift as well.

"They're being taught to be a giving, loving person, and they are also very respectful to the elderly," said Ms. Thompson.

A total of 20 scales were purchased by the children. They have 19 more to give away.

They will be distributed among elderly individuals in need.
