MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Board discussed the possibility of hiring a lobbying firm to represent their interests in Lansing regarding a mining tax proposal.
A severance tax proposed by Representative Matt Hukki targets non-ferrous mining.
Board members are concerned it could end up costing local government millions of dollars in tax revenue.
At Tuesday night's meeting, the board discussed a proposal to pay the firm of Dudack and Johnson about $3,000 per month over one year to protect the county's interests.
"Somebody's got to take this and run with it in Lansing. It's probably going to come from the governor's office to push for changing the way that mines are taxed. And, if we can stop it before it starts, it might be worth it," said Commissioner Bill Nordeen.
The board did take action on the proposal and will attempt to discuss the issue with state representatives in the coming weeks.
