Tim and Rick are "Being the Change"

HOUGHTON -- Inside the Goodwill Work Center, two members of their Community Cleaning Crew are getting ready to head off to work.

Meet Tim Peterson and Rick Manninen. They have been cleaning the City Center in Houghton for over two decades, and every morning at around 9:30 a.m., their workday begins.

"Tim does just the bathrooms very well detailed. I just set him up with the mop bucket and let him go for his thing. He knows very well what he's been doing," said Job Coach Supervisor James Benson.

With 20 years of experience, Tim takes his crate filled with cleaning supplies and wipes the stalls and sinks, and then he moves on to the toilets until they are spotless.

"I like working here. After I work, I feel better," said Manninen.

He also mops the bathroom floors before retuning the trash cans, and when it comes to taking out the trash, that is Rick's job.

"[He] works very well, keeps to himself by cruising around the whole building and picks up everybody's garbage from their office and bathrooms," Benson said.

Whether the sun is shining or the snow is blowing, Rick finishes his daily trash duties by taking all of that trash to the dumpsters.

"I know I've been here for 18 years myself, and they were here long before me, and they both do a wonderful job," said Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly.

The two were honored with certificates for their longstanding service last May, and the picture from the ceremony permanently hangs in front of the City Center which captures the overall feeling people have of Rick and Tim's service...appreciation.

Goodwill's mission is to help people achieve their full potential through the power of work, and these two outstanding individuals are proof of that statement. We congratulate Tim and Rick for “Being the Change."
