IRON MOUNTAIN -- Back in December, TV6's Iron Mountain-Kingsford bureau reporter Adam Chick went looking for the perfect Christmas gifts for gals. 

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and you guessed it, this time he's looking for the perfect Valentine's Day gift.

Can you really get away with the standard chocolates and a card on Valentine's Day anymore?  That may have worked in elementary school, but not so much anymore.

“A big diamond,” said Sherri Erickson.

Well, diamonds are certainly nice and are usually a safe bet.

“Diamonds you can't go wrong with,” Erickson says. “They match everything.”

But what about somebody on a budget?

“Flowers would be nice; it would be a big surprise because usually I have to take care of that myself,” said Linnea Marchetti.

But no matter what your budget, a handwritten card is a special touch.

“Handwritten card is important,” said Kelli Frappier. “Don't just buy me something.  Remind me why you're buying it.”

And there's always the ever popular tropical vacation.

“A cruise,” said Toni Lori. “A cruise in the Carribean.”

So let's compare.  On Christmas, diamonds are out, but certainly in on Valentine's Day.  Chocolates are actually favored more on Christmas, while flowers get the nod on Valentine's Day.  But the ever popular massage gift certificate and exotic vacation is apparently acceptable at any point during the year.

But at the end of the day, that age old adage, "it's the thought that counts," still applies.

“I love gifts,” said Debbie Gursky, “and I know if somebody gets me something, I know they've spent the time to do it.”

Engagement rings and things like that are obviously usually for people that have been involved for quite a while.  However, if you haven't been involved that long and are maybe interested in still buying some jewelry, I'm told there are some very nice things available for under $100.
