MARQUETTE -- The numbers are in and by all accounts, the 2012 Noquemanon Ski Marathon was a success.

Over 1,500 skiers participated in this year's races this past weekend.

Event organizers believe the lack of snow in other parts of the country, paired with a hard cap on the number of racers, led to the large turnout.

Many volunteers in the community showed up to help as well.

"We had over 600 volunteers throughout the community that came to the finish line, that were positioned at 7 different aid stations throughout the course as well as the start lines.  You know our community has volunteerism as one of their great priorities; they should be very proud of themselves," said Race Coordinator, Nicole Dewald.

With the success of this past weekend, race organizers are planning to continue the format of a three-day weekend of events for next year.
