ESCANABA -- The Steam and Gas Engine Village at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba has a new attraction and it weighs about 80 tons.

The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association got a 1940s marine engine about two years ago. It was donated from Basic Marine and Basic Towing.

Last fall, a concrete base was built.

It's an interesting piece of machinery, and the long-term plans are to run the engine during the state fair.

"When people come to the state fair, they look down from the midway and they'll see this and say, oh my gosh. What is that thing?" said Association President, Skip Dufour. "And it's just kind of like a magnet to attract them to the village."

The next step is to put a canopy over the engine to protect it from the weather.
