The 13th year for a Finnish American tradition

HANCOCK -- Earlier today, many people came out to celebrate Heikinpäivä in Hancock.

Even though there was a bunch of snow swirling around, that didn't stop anyone from enjoying the Finnish festivities.

Heikinpäivä started off with a little family fun where kids sat inside a whipsled and enjoyed the curvy ride. They also got a chance to compete in a kicksled race.

“We've been coming for nine years. The kids like to go on the kicksled and whipsled,” said Mike Bach. “They like to see the reindeer, and there's usually some big dogs walking around. Then there's the parade; usually it's pretty cold and this year is no exception.”

Couples participated in the wife carrying contest where they had to act out different scenarios like unfolding rugs and serving coffee to guests.

Even though Heikinpäivä is over, there's still plenty of fun to come because Winter Carnival starts tomorrow.

***Tune in Monday for more on Heikinpäivä.***
