ISHPEMING -- The recall petition drive against Ishpeming City Council members Claudia Demarest, Elaine Racine and Michael Tall is one step closer to a ballot.

The three council members are targeted for their "failure to vote for the transfer of retirement credits for Police Chief Jim Bjorne."

Petitions with over 560 signatures for each council member were turned in to Marquette County Clerk Peter Dishnow on Monday.

The county clerk and the Ishpeming City Clerk have 35 days to review the petitions.  The announcement of the number of qualified signatures will be made by the county clerk.  If the number is at least 487, a recall election may be held in May.

"The response from the voters was very, very enthusiastic," said recall spokesman Bob Clark.  "We are very pleased with the results from our petition drive because there were so many registered voters in the city that were supporting our effort."

While not reaching its goal of 600 signatures, the committee is very satisfied with the results of the petition drive and wishes to thank all the volunteers who circulated petitions and especially all the Ishpeming voters who signed petitions.
