MUNISING -- Effective January 30, the Munising Michigan State Police Post will close and a new detachment with a different operational mission will open.

The state, as part of a three-phase plan to reduce operating costs, has changed the Munising post into a detachment.  A detachment is not open to the public and is more of a command center for state troopers working in an area, however, appointments can be made.

The Munising detachment will be located at the state prison in Munising.

"Effective January 30, the Munising post will close, however, that does not indicate that troopers will not be in the area," said Lt. Robert Parnanski, Post Commander.  "They will continue with their service uninterrupted, and we're simply moving from a bricks-and-mortar type of situation to a mobile-command type situation."

Lieutenant Pernanski also noted that they were fortunate that the space was available in Munising, thanks to the Alger Correctional Facility.

The state police can be contacted by dialing 911 or 1-800-525-5555.
