The storm forced people to take extreme caution while driving
MARQUETTE -- Our streak of mild winter finally came to an end Thursday. The U.P. was finally hit with a long overdue winter storm.
Some areas saw more significant snowfall than others. Driving conditions became hazardous as a result. The roads started out slushy earlier but have gotten icier as the day went on.
Thursday's initial warmer temperature caused the snow to melt, then temperatures dropped quickly, forming ice, making the roads slippery.
People out on the road today took caution when it came to the storm.
"They're deceiving. Deceiving. You got some nice spots, then all of a sudden out of nowhere, something bad happens, you know. And you gotta stay alert," said driver Caleb Scanlon.
One of the most dangerous things for drivers isn't the actual snow and ice on the road, but rather visibility...or lack thereof.
With wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour, the snow was creating a "white out effect," making it hard for drivers to see very far.
Despite those dangerous conditions, Michigan State Police say there weren't any serious accidents, but drivers still struggled with getting around.
"People just need to be careful. And I've seen a lot of people driving safe today, and that's all you gotta do. They're a bit nasty, but you just need to be cautious," Scranlon added.
