MARQUETTE -- The United States Coast Guard performed training for ice water rescues on Monday in Marquette's Lower Harbor.

Personnel from the Coast Guard completed maneuvers designed to assess the team's preparedness in the event of a rescue in the icy waters of the Upper Peninsula.

Petty Officer First Class Michael Davis says the recent warmer weather does seem odd, but every winter is different, and he has a reminder for everyone.

"That there's no such thing as safe ice," said Davis.  "Any time you are going to go on the ice, ice fishing, snowmobiling, or if you just want to transit, make sure that you tell a buddy, tell a spouse where you are going, what time you plan to be back.  Taking a life jacket is paramount."

Davis also says although Lake Superior is not frozen as of yet, he still thinks we have a long winter ahead of us.

He advises everyone to use caution on any ice surface.
