MARQUETTE -- Despite signs that the economy may be improving, some charities say they may be in for their toughest year yet.
Tax credits for donations expired at the end of last year. That allowed Michigan income taxpayers to deduct from their tax liability 50 percent of their gifts to certain non-profits, up to $200 in total contributions per person.
Non-profits like St. Vincent de Paul in Marquette County say that might keep some from donating. They say they're also seeing many in the area in need of help.
"It could make a difference, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. There may be a little more push that we are going to have to go out and actively seek donations and cash," said Laurie Schmidt of St. Vincent de Paul.
St. Vincent de Paul does say they're confident they have many volunteers and donors who give because they want to, not because of the former tax break.
The new tax laws effect non-profits like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, public broadcasting and universities.
