Saturday should see mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid to upper 30s. It looks to be the warmest day that we'll see for quite some time. Lows should dip into the low 20s.
Most of the U.P. should experience relatively quiet conditions for any outdoor New Year's Eve festivities, but some snow will develop late in the evening moving from west to east. It should start light, but intensify overnight.
Ontonagon will see some of the earliest snow between 6 and 10pm. Marquette should start to see flurries a little after midnight, and Newberry a couple hours later.
A low pressure system will move through bringing heavy snow to most of the U.P. The northwestern counties will see the worst due to lake enhancement. Strong winds will also produce blowing snow and low visibility will make driving conditions hazardous.
As a cold front passes Sunday, it will begin a cold trend for the upcoming week. Monday will see lingering lake effect snow behind the low pressure system. The rest of the week looks less likely for snow.
Altogether, accumulations could easily exceed 8-10" in some areas. Stay warm, drive safe, and have a happy new year!
