HOUGHTON -- With the holiday shopping rush coming to a close, that means some of those gift ideas will be returned.

Not everyone can say they got what they wanted for Christmas, and Consumer Reports shows that last year, 20 percent of Americans returned at least one present from the holiday season.

One of the most returned items during this time of year is clothing, and many stores try to work with customers when it comes to returns.

"We try and have a hassle-free return policy for our customers. Our general return policy is 90 days with a receipt. However, we do have the capability to look up receipts for customers as long as it was purchased on a J.C. Penney card or another form of credit," said J.C. Penney store manager, Danielle Ventre-Olson.

A receipt or gift receipt is a very important tool because it is actual proof that the item was bought from a particular store.

If, for some reason, your gift didn't come with a receipt, many stores offer in-store credit.

"In-store credit, what it's called is a merchandise return voucher, and it can be used online and it can be used in the store and it works just like a gift card would for our customers," Ventre-Olson explained.

Experts say most retailers are much more lenient when it comes to returning items right after the holidays, but try not to wait too long, and remember to save those tags.

Some stores do have policies against specific items being returned, like undergarments and electronics. Many electronic items, like phones and video games, should be kept in their original packaging otherwise most stores will not accept them.

Experts say always remember to save the receipt and pay attention to the return policy to make it easier for those holiday returns.
