Anyone is welcome to skate, but only if the lights are on, an adult is present, and if all skaters wear a helmet
MARQUETTE -- The generosity of some neighbors in Marquette has really brightened the faces of some local children.
The Forest Park Pond on Forest Park Drive was once just a fun idea. Now, in its third winter, it's the highlight of some kids' Christmas season.
The goal was to have it ready in time for Christmas. It has now been up for three days and will be open until March. The rink takes hundreds of manhours to be completed each winter. The primary structure is assembled in October, and the liner is put down after the first snow.
The ice takes 9,000 gallons of water.
"Yeah, it started as a fun idea and it's really turned into a lot more than that, but it's good," said Mike Golisek and Rod Riesland, the builders. "There's nothing else for the kids in this community to do really, right around this area, so, you know, we get kids from all up and down the street that come over and have a good time."
