HOUGHTON -- Presents, presents, and more presents!  Between now and Christmas, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly will be delivering gifts and food boxes throughout the Keweenaw. Many of the food items were donated by the local churches, and each church contributed a specific item for every box.

Little Brothers says they are looking for volunteers interested in delivering and visiting with elderly people who will be spending this holiday season by themselves.

“These are our elderly friends, these are our elderly family, and it’s an important time of the year to show our elderly friends how much we care for them,” said Cathy Aten, Little Brothers Program Coordinator.

The idea behind these wrapped food boxes is to fill it with an assortment of items that the elderly friends can enjoy with themselves or another person, and also unwrapping a box can sometimes be a fun thing to do.

Around 200 food boxes and Christmas gifts will be donated, and Little Brothers says the gifts represent how much they care for the elderly.

Many of the volunteers say participating in this event is a great opportunity for themselves and the people they visit.

“We hear all the time from our elderly friends how grateful they are for the gift ,and even more importantly, how they love the company of the volunteers,” Aten said.

This year around 140 elderly friends will also receive a personal holiday gift, and Little Brothers says they are still accepting donations.

The holidays are traditionally a time for families to get together and visit among one another, and Little Brothers wants to bring those visits to the elderly friends.
