State lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the bill despite safety concerns

LANSING (AP) -- Noisier, more powerful fireworks will become legal in Michigan through legislation signed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

The legislation signed Tuesday will make it legal to sell and use explosives such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and Roman candles.  The bill takes effect next month, in plenty of time for the next Fourth of July holiday.

Michigan's current list of legal fireworks for residents without special permits is generally limited to ground-based or novelty items such as sparklers, smoke devices, toy snakes and toy noisemakers.

The bills overwhelmingly passed the state Legislature despite some safety concerns.  Lawmakers say many Michigan residents have made out-of-state trips to buy the firework for years.
