MARQUETTE -- Forty percent of people in the Upper Peninsula become sedentary in the winter months.  Often the colder temperatures and small amount of sunlight are attributed as the cause of that trend.

Some say staying active in a safe manner in this climate can be as easy as a six dollar investment.

Down Wind Sports in Marquette says it's important for walkers and runners to wear some sort of reflective gear.

"This time of year is harder to get out because it may be cold, it's dark," said Down Wind Sports co-owner Bill Thompson.  "Take safety precautions so traffic can see them, and they don't slip on the ice."

Items range from $6 to $30; they're a hot item right now as shoppers are picking them up as holiday gifts.

Down Wind Sports is also selling no-slip shoe gear for runners and walkers.
