After a luncheon at the Holiday Inn, Republican Pete Hoekstra took questions from voters at a public meeting

MARQUETTE -- Republican Senate hopeful Pete Hoekstra met with local voters in Marquette on Saturday.

After a luncheon at the Holiday Inn, Hoekstra took questions from voters at a public meeting. A mixed crowd of students, veterans and elderly questioned Hoekstra on Michigan's economy, unemployment and job creation. Voters wanted to know what his policies are on lowering the unemployment rate in the U.P. and effective ways of dealing with student loans.

Hoekstra said job creation and investments need to lie in the hands of local government.

"For a number of these kinds of investment opportunities, it's the responsibility of the state and local government to make those kinds of decisions and get the federal government out," said Hoekstra. "It's about restoring control of our local schools, back to local parents, administrators in the state."

Hoekstra added that resources, such as mining in the U.P., need to be used to develop high quality jobs.
